Determining Comic Book Value

by Candace Right

Have you found a stash of old comics in the attic? Did you discover and decide to buy someone's collection of old comic books at a garage sale, intending to sell them for a few extra bucks? Wherever you've gotten them, and whether you have five comic books or five hundred, you need to know how to determine comic book value.

You have a lot of ways to determine the value of a comic book. First of all, based on accepted guidelines, you need to know what kind of condition it's in. A comic book's desirability and rarity is another determining factor in what kind of price it will fetch.

Another term for determining a comic book value is "grading." There are two ways to do this. You browse online to find resources that will help you determine its grade. Alternatively, you can consult the CGC (Comics Guaranty Company) by mail or by going to a comic book convention. The grading terms are Mint, Near Mint, Very Fine, Fine, Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor. There is a lot of information online to help you determine the grade, and you can also consult a book or guide on the subject.

Learning comic book value becomes much easier once you have determined the grade. One way to get a good idea as to how comic books are selling is to check out online auctions on eBay. But when you're looking at auctions, be aware that there are special things that will cause prices to vary from issue to issue. Printing errors and rarity, for example.

You could also buy and consult a comic book pricing guide. There are lots of different ones. Some guides will give you one price for each comic. Some give you a range of values depending on the comic's condition. Last but not least, use a good search engine to look up information about a specific issue. Join online communities and interact with other collectors.
